The oval on the labels has always been at the heart of diptyque and goes back a long way, to when the diptyque adventure first began, when its founders were designing textiles in the 1960s. We can follow the thread all the way back to Ancient Rome.
The oval shape of the shields used by Roman Praetorian Guards featured in one of the original diptyque fabrics. Certainly no soldiers themselves, but true fans of ancient culture nevertheless, our founders consequently adopted the oval on their labels. The decision was made that their oval paper shield would proudly bear the names of their candles and indeed of all their future creations.
